Kitchen Sinks

Find a Supplier

Kitchen Sinks come in a few options. You need to choose between:

  • Undermount
  • Flush MountUndermount sink with mixer tap

Construction Material

  • Stainless Steel
  • Stone
  • Engineered Stone
  • Quartz
  • Acrylic

Undermount Sinks

Undermount means the sink is installed underneath the bench top. In order to do this the benchtop material must be granite, stone, stainless steel, quartz, or acrylic, basically a solid surface. Undermount sinks are not suitable for laminate or timber benchtops. This is because the sink sits beneath the edge of the benchtop and is exposed to water. The Undermount option creates a sleek, continuous look to the benchtop, there is no lip to catch dirt and is therefore more hygienic. The downside being they are more expensive and the benchtop, if not included in your contract will be another big ticket item.

Flush Mount Sinks

Flush mounted sinks can be used with any of the above benchtops and also laminate and timber. The sink lip/edge sits on top of the benchtop and is sealed with silicone to prevent water permeating the laminate or timber benchtop and causing it to warp.

Flush mount is the standard type of sink you in most homes.

Helpful Hints

  • If you choose an undermount sink you can request drainage channels be cut into your benchtop to provide a drying area for hand washed items in lieu of a draining board.
  • Remember you may need to wash pots and pans in the sink so don’t make it too small.
  • Two sinks are often best so you can rinse off dishes after washing. Also you can be soaking something and pour something else down the drain. Single sinks can be restrictive.
  • Installing tea towel racks and washing liquid dispensers in the cupboard under the sink is a good idea
  • Remember the dishwasher is normally positioned under the drainer.
  • Consider a kitchen designer to make the most of your available space. Dead corners are a waste of precious cupboard space.
