Window Tinting and Security Film
There are two avenues of window film application
- Laminated Glass
- Window film application
Either of these processes may be used to address one or a combination of
- Solar Control
- Safety
- Security
- Privacy
- Glare
- Colour/ Decorative
- Improved acoustic properties
The Facts
Laminated Glass
When the required film is applied between two sheets of glass then the glass is installed on site, this must be ordered THROUGH YOUR BUILDER when ordering the windows. (Bullet proof glass is multiple layers of this glass)
Window Film Application
This is applied to the existing glazing and can be applied at any time much like car window tinting
Both types come in a variety of colours, tints, reflective qualities and security levels that will help hold the glass together in the event of an attempted break-in.
Task Oriented Tinting
Windows in specific areas will be required to perform different tasks. For example Front Elevation windows may need to create a secure barrier and reflect the rising sunlight, while living area windows may face north and be required to allow winter heat gain but protect the sofa from fading, while posing no security threat:
North Facing Windows Specification
Request from your Builder/glass/window supplier
High SHGC (Solar Heat Gain) to allow passive heat gain.
Low Td (Transmittance – Damaging) – This is the UV passing through the window.
Having a high SHGC will allow passive solar gain and a low Td will reduce the damaging UV light coming through.
Eastern and Western Windows
These windows need Low SHGC to stop heat gain from direct sunlight in summer.
South Facing Windows
These windows get no direct sun so do not require treatment (unless to match the colour of the other windows)
Helpful Hints
Consider Decorative Films to create privacy in wet area windows with matching film on the shower screen.
