Find a Supplier

There are two basic sheet flooring products

  • Sheet Vinyl or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) flooring
  • Lino or Linoleum

Lino

Patented in 1863 it was manufactured from linseed oil, pigments pine rosin and pine flour. Linoleum is still manufactured today. It has a good environmental footprint as it is made from renewable resources. It is ecologically friendly made from the flax plant using solidified linseed oil on a jute or canvas type backing. As a natural product it doesn't emit VOC's into your home and is being specified more and more by environmentally aware clients. It can be dificult to source and is more expensive than vinyl. However seems to be making a comeback with Designers and Architects

Vinyl Flooring

Sheet vinyl floring is made from PVC. There are numerous manufacturers. It is recommended that you confirm the environmental and sustainability credentials of any vinyl flooring you are considering. Many responsible manufacturers will exceed current environmental specification for Australia. Modern vinyl is 100% recyclable and has a long lifespan which helps reduce its impact.. Responsible manufacturers will have low VOC and no formaldehyde vinyls. Check their credentials on the manufacturers website.

Vinyl is supplied on a 4000mm wide roll. Prices are per linear meter (4000x1000mm) and range from about $100 to $300. The more expensive vinyls will be thicker and more resilient.

Sheet vinyl flooring is available in many attractive designs.

  • Timber look
  • Tile look
  • Stone look
  • Slate
  • Ceramic tile
  • Cork
  • Patterned/ Geometric/ Abstract

No matter what look you’re after there will be pattern to suit.

Vinyl is laid directly onto the concrete slab, slab must be hard, level, dry, smooth and clean. (Vinyl is no longer glued down it is just laid over the concrete) As vinyl is made of PVC it has a flexible surface so will not be effected if the subsurface (concrete slab) forms small cracks.

The advantages of vinyl flooring are many

  • Inexpensive
  • Very quick to install
  • Waterproof
  • Hygenic
  • Easy to clean
  • Huge variety of colours and patterns
  • Soft underfoot
  • Suitable for wet areas
